How food truly works as medicine:

BONE BROTH = *boots immunity *strengthens bone, joints and ligaments *reduces inflammation *improves digestion & heals the gut *high in vitamins & minerals *improves cellulite *helps to balance blood sugar *improves skin & hair *Assists in healing autoimmune disorders

Bone broths contain minerals in forms that your body can easily absorb: calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, silicon, sulphur and others. They contain chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine, the compounds sold as pricey supplements to reduce inflammation, arthritis and joint pain.

Yes at ‘Gut Happy’ we do sell amazing ‘Meadow and Marrow bone broth’. But sometimes it’s nice to make your own (and at a fraction of the cost).

Ingredients

Note: Leave skin on all vegetables

  • 1 organic chicken carcass (you can be sustainable by roasting your own organic chook and use the carcass for your broth)

*Always use organic or grass fed bones

  • 2-4 organic chicken feet (optional)

  • 2 Tbs Gut Happy apple cider vinegar

  • 1 large onion cut in half

  • 1 large carrot

  • 2 celery stalks

  • ½ large zucchini

  • 1 tablespoon black peppercorns

  • 2 bay leaves

  • 1 whole tomato

  • 1 handful of fresh herbs

  • 1 Tbs organic turmeric powder, or 3cm fresh turmeric

  • 4 -6 garlic cloves

  • 3cm fresh ginger

  • 2 tsp Himalayan salt

  • Purified water to fill slow cooker

Method

  1. Place chicken carcass & feet into slow cooker, pour over apple cider vinegar. Leave for 20 minutes to allow apple cider vinegar to draw out nutrients.

  2. Add all remaining ingredients.

  3. Place lid on slow cooker, set on low and simmer for 24-48 hours. Top up water at 12 hour period if need be.

  4. When your broth is done allow to cool slightly. Using tongs, or a large slotted spoon, remove all the bones and meat. Pour the broth through a fine mesh strainer into a 2-3ltr glass jar and discard the solids. Cool and refrigerate for up to 7 days (or freeze for up to 6 months in ice cube trays to allow for easy portioning).

*Reheat over stove only (as microwaves cause nutrients to be lost).

**Be sure to pimp up your broth before heating with a squeeze of lemon juice and a dash or 2 of tamari.

LEMONS = *boosts immune *balances pH *detoxifies *aids in weight loss *anti-cancer properties *hydrates & oxygenates body to feel refreshed

When to Broth on...!

1 Turn to bone broth when you need to fight temptation.

Tempting foods are everywhere (especially during the holiday season). If you want to resist them, you need a secret weapon—and brothing is that weapon!

When you sip on a mug of bone broth, it fills you up and warms you down to your toes. It cuts down on cravings, allowing you to easily say no to tempting junk foods.

2 Include bone broth in your beauty routine.

Bone broth is loaded with the building blocks of collagen, so it makes your fine lines and wrinkles vanish. And when you replace a meal with bone broth — which is low in calories and rich in fat-melting nutrients — you trim your figure as well. So on those nights when you’re painting your nails and waxing your legs, add bone broth to your beauty ritual.

3 Let bone broth soothe your soul.

De-stressing is one of the most important things you can do for your health—and it’s also crucial if you want to lose weight. That’s because stress elevates your levels of cortisol, which can add inches around your waist (we call it a “cortisol tire”). In addition, stress makes you crave fat and sugar.
