The importance of prebiotic fibres

Whilst probiotics get all the attention, prebiotics need their time in the spotlight too!

Prebiotics are like the fertilizer to our garden (gut flora/ good bacteria/ probiotics). Prebiotic Fibre nourishes the good bacteria already in the gut and inhibits the growth of bad bacteria (the nasty stuff). Prebiotics help boost immunity, as they enhance our ability to absorb important nutrients and trace minerals from the foods we eat.

What is it?

So here is the science explanation: lactulose is a semi-synthetic disaccharide (so that means it's two simple sugars joined together) and it is composed of both galactose and fructose (yep they are the two sugars). As a prebiotic, lactulose avoids digestion in the small intestine and as it’s a prebiotic, when it reaches the colon it is still intact and this is where it can be metabolised by specific bacteria, specifically Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli (the good gut bacteria)

The benefits to you

So basically what it does is it selectively feeds the good bacteria, which is Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli, and this happens towards the end of the gut! These good bacteria have many beneficial effects, including the production of short chain fatty acids and reducing the pH of the colon. All things that are good for your gut and will therefore benefit you!
